The Full Story
Myla was born on July 1, 2023 after pre-viable, premature rupture of membranes at 17 weeks. Premature rupture of membranes (also known as PPROM) is a complication of pregnancy in which the amniotic sac ruptures (water breaks) prematurely, and for previable gestations, the results can be devastating. Initially, Myla's family was given very little hope for her survival, and they were preparing to say goodbye to their baby should she be born prior to a time any medical intervention could help; but after a lengthy bedrest period and antepartum stay, Myla came into the world at just over 24 weeks, at only 1 pound and 7.3 oz. She was a mere 11.4 inches long at birth, but thankfully was large enough for medical intervention at the local Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and she was quickly stabilized and placed into care there. She faced many challenges during her 129 day NICU stay, including sepsis, a bowel perforation, a grade II brain bleed, and all the obstacles that come with very underdeveloped lungs and an extremely premature birth. Her mother stayed by her bedside the entirety of the stay, while her father had to continue working and her three siblings at home resided with grandparents. Having the family fragmented during this period of time was very difficult, but with the love and support from family and friends, they made it through and Myla discharged home on November 7th, 2023, twenty-one days after her actual due date. Forever grateful for the support they received and the love they were shown during their time in the NICU, Myla's mom made it her mission to help other families facing long-term NICU stays in the state of Kentucky. Thus, Miracles for Myla, that started as a Facebook page to keep everyone informed on Myla's progress, became a nonprofit organization dedicated to blessing NICU families across the state with small miracles of their own.
